DIY decorations set the mood for your reception

The right wedding decorations can bring your reception to life and set the mood for your guests. By getting creative and using your imagination, you can create cheap wedding decorations that won’t break the bank.

First you’ll need to assess your wedding venue to see how many and what type of decorations you’ll need. You might get lucky if your venue is extra fancy as you won’t need to decorate at all. Don’t forget to ask them what you’re allowed to bring in. Some venues won’t allow candles or confetti so it’s always best to ask first.

Centrepieces make beautiful table decorations and can be put together very cheaply. Candles, fruit arrangements, plants, flowers, and balloons are all things that you can arrange yourself.

Look for cheap fabrics and tulle to use for drapes around entry ways and tables. Hanging white lights from the ceiling can create a magical look. If your theme is polka dots, hang painted circles made of cardboard from the ceiling. Imagine wowing your guests with unique and clever decorations all made by you!

Celebrations Plus: Cheap Wedding Decorations

Have you thought of?

Purchasing drinking glasses in bulk in different sizes to use for candle holders instead of vases for your wedding centrepieces? Drinking glasses are much cheaper than vases so you’ll save loads of money. They create a stunning, layered effect when using six to ten of them and they look so elegant when lit. You can sprinkle flower petals, clear or coloured beads, or seashells around them for an added touch. Ikea is a great place to find cheap drinking glasses in many sizes.

Cheap wedding tip

This cheap wedding tip for finding bargains came from Mel.

"A friend of mine had a 'wedding cheese' instead of a wedding cake. It was made up of 3 or 4 large, round, locally produced cheeses in different sizes stacked up in the manner of a wedding cake. By the time everyone has finished the meal a lot of people are not that bothered by the cake - they've already had dessert! The cheese was brought out later on with some crackers and chutneys and went down a treat. It was also a lot cheaper than a wedding cake."

This is a fabulous idea. Later in the reception, guests are often hungry for a small snack, especially after having a few spirits. A ‘wedding cheese’ would satisfy everyone’s hunger and would certainly be a conversation piece.

Final thought

No two weddings are alike so don’t feel like you have to go crazy with wedding decorations if that’s not your style. Sometimes less is best and it’s up to you to decide what theme and mood you want to set for your reception. Remember that it’s your party and everything from your attire to your cake to your decorations should be what you and your groom wants. If you dream it, you can achieve it – cheaply!

See you next time!

Nicola
