Issue 38 - Let's talk about wedding cakes May 31, 2010 |
| Hello Welcome to this issue of Cheap Wedding Tips - the newsletter that brings you the latest money-saving tips for your budget wedding. What's inside:
Tips for choosing and making your own wedding cake Your wedding cake will surely be an important part of your reception. Most guests can’t wait to see the wedding cake and will often look for it before taking their seats. You’ll want to choose a cake that fits in with your wedding theme and shows who you are as a couple. With so many cakes to choose from, where do you start? First you’ll need to decide on the size. Next, choose your design (this will be the biggest decision to make), and last decide on the flavour.
If you’re planning to make your own cake, you'll need to make sure that you have all of the supplies necessary to make your cake. With such a big job to take on, you don’t want to come up empty handed when it comes to the right supplies. You’ll also need to decide on the type and style of cake stand to use. Don’t forget about your cake topper. Making your own cake topper can be a really fun DIY project. Monogrammed toppers are very popular these days and are so easy to make. You can purchase plastic or metal letters at most craft stores. Next you can add some crystals in the colours to match your wedding to make yourself a gorgeous topper with lots of bling. If monograms aren’t your thing, think of other little trinkets that reflect you and your groom that can be made into a cake topper.

Have you thought of? Where you are going to make your wedding cake? If you’re planning to make your own cake, you need to be sure that you are working in a kitchen that you’re familiar with. If you’ll be baking in a friend or relative’s kitchen, be sure they are there to help you with their oven. We all know that one person’s oven may cook hotter and faster or cooler and slower than what we’re used to in our own kitchen. The best tip I can offer is to do a trial run at least three months in advance. This will give you plenty of time to refine your recipe and practice icing and decorating the cake. Final thought Wedding cakes are traced back to Ancient Roman times where the wedding ceremony was finalised by the groom breaking a cake of wheat or barley over the bride’s head. To my relief, we’ve come along way since then. What was once a symbol of male dominance has now turned into a tradition of beauty. Even the simplest of wedding cakes are still so lovely to me. The hard work put into them, whether it’s done by a professional baker or by the bride herself, is really worth it when you witness the bride and groom cutting their cake together.
Happy planning!
