Simple, Easy Ideas for Cheap Wedding Decorations

One way to keep your budget in check is to focus on cheap wedding decorations. From your tables to your walls, you’ll want to spruce up your venues, but it’s important you don’t break the bank.

This article focuses on candles, fabrics, flower and paper can be used to create inexpensive wedding decorations for your wedding.

Candles create soft, subtle lighting

Candles are a favourite for cheap wedding decorations. You can pick them up very cheaply from Wilkos, Ikea and pound shops.

The pretty light that they give off creates a very romantic, subtle lighting. (Check with your venue that it’s ok to use candles first).

Some candle ideas include:

Use tealights for cheap wedding decor
  • Candles of different heights in the centre of the table - place on a plate and sprinkle coloured beads around the base.
  • Floating candles with flower heads or petals.
  • Tealights dotted around the venue, both outside and inside look really pretty. They're especially good as centrepieces too.
  • Spray your candles with car paint or glitter spray to match your colour theme.

Cheap ideas with flowers

Flowers are not usually that cheap, but if you use choose wisely, you can make them go a lot further to create cheap wedding decorations. I’m a big fan of large flower heads as they look more impressive and hydrangea, peonies, gerberas and lilies are some of my favourite large headed wedding flowers.

Some ideas with flowers:

Petals wedding decoration
  • Dry out the petals and use them as confetti to throw as you walk out of the ceremony.
  • Use the fresh petals as table confetti to decorate your tables.
  • Use the large flower heads as your centrepiece in a bowl of water.
  • Use a simple vase with flowers. Tall flowers, such as gladioli look stunning on their own and make a very elegant decoration around the venue.

Hydrangea blooms in July-September and can often be found in gardens. Why not ask your neighbours if you could have a few flower heads? I'm sure they'll let you have them when they hear it's for your wedding. Pick them 2-3 days in advance and keep them in water, unless you're drying them out.

Clever ideas with paper

Over the years paper has been used regularly as a wedding decoration, whether hanging from walls or on top of tables.

Paper ideas include:

Topiary wedding decoration
  • Use paper garlands around the venue. Wedding garland shapes include bells, horseshoes and hearts. They look great at the edge of doorways or hanging from the ceiling.
  • Create a topiary using tissue paper and Styrofoam. You could then hang them from the ceiling or place on a small garden cane and secure in a plant pot. You can pick up a topiary from most craft stores or garden centres.
  • An alternative topiary would be to use flower heads. Daisies and gerberas which would all work really well.

Look to nature for ideas

Looking outside at natural objects can provide a wealth of cheap wedding decorations. Plus, since they’re usually lying around in the garden, they’re pretty much free!

Natural ideas include:

  • Pick up shells if you live near the beach. Make sure you clean them off thoroughly to remove all the dirt, sand and seaside smells though. You can then use them as centrepieces.
  • Use branches or large twigs from the garden. The thinner, spindly branches look great when sprayed silver and draped with fairy lights. These will brighten up corners of your room or you could use mini versions as table decorations.

Ideas with fabric

Using fabric to decorate your wedding venue can create a rich, lavish appearance and hide a multitude of sins. From wall swags to table cloths, fabric can be used ingeniously to help decorate your venue.

My fabric favourites are:

Tulle wedding decoration
  • Use simple (and cheap) tulle as swags at the edge of your buffet tables as well as around doors and entrances.
  • Cover unsightly walls and unused doors in indoor venues with fabric.
  • Use cotton sheets as a cheap alterative to tablecloths.
  • Tie satin or organza ribbons around plain vases, on the edge of tables and the backs of chairs to add a bit of luxury.

Use a combination of the ideas above or maybe just one. Whatever you choose you're sure to save with these ideas for cheap wedding decorations.
