Cheap Wedding Garters

Many brides today use cheap wedding garters to fulfil a tradition that has been around since the 14th century. Back then, having a piece of the bride's clothing on her wedding day was considered lucky.

In fact, sometimes mobs of people - mainly a bit tipsy from wedding wine - would rip a bride's dress apart as she left with her groom. Later, though, brides started taking off the garter to distract the mobs from her actual dress.

Eventually, the tradition turned into the one we know today, where the groom removes the garter and tosses it to the single men at the reception. In the 19th century, the garter would represent a bride's virginity and the consummation of her marriage. Often, the garter is also used as the bride's "something blue," which symbolises purity and faithfulness.

These days, cheap wedding garters can be hard to come by. Like everything else in the world of weddings, they are usually overpriced. To avoid paying a fortune for a small wedding accessory that you're going to toss to one of the male guests, you can make your own.

To make your own garter, you just need a strip of fabric, some lace for trimming and elastic. Measure around the part of your thigh where the garter will go. (Hint: It's easier to stay modest at your reception if you put the garter just above your knee.) Cut a strip of fabric about eight centimetres wide and one and a half times the measurement of your thigh. Your lace should be as long as the strip of fabric. The elastic strip should be just a bit smaller than your thigh so that the garter will stay on without being too tight.

Sew the fabric into a tube by folding it in half, sewing along the seam, and turning it right-side out. Then sew the lace on to the edges of the fabric. Slide the elastic into the tube, and hand sew the edges of the fabric together. Then, decorate your garter with charms, bows, or whatever you like.

Cheap wedding garters elsewhere

If you don't want to make your own wedding garter, you can still find one for next to nothing. One good place to look is on eBay, where many sellers make customised garters for a very low price. You can also look at online wedding outlet stores. One good option is to look at generic garters that you can then decorate on your own. Taking a simple white garter and decorating it with beads, bows, rosettes and charms is a good way to save money and to create a keepsake.

Keep in mind that you may want to make or buy two cheap wedding garters. You can wear them both on your wedding day, and then you'll have one left over after your new husband tosses one to the single men. A wedding garter makes a good keepsake that can be put in the back of a wedding album or kept with your preserved dress.
