Your Best Cheap Wedding Tips

In a recent survey, I asked "what were your best cheap wedding tips?" and you came back with lots of different responses, but there was a common theme among many of them. That theme was that your wedding is about the marriage ceremony and not to get hung up on the frills, party and celebration.

I was quite surprised with this, yet at the same time pleased to see that many of you are being very sensible and are keeping your weddings in perspective. It seems if you start to run away with the ‘wedding industry’, you’ll quickly overspend.

Shop in the sales for bargains

Your cheap wedding tips...

"Buy things in the sales!"

"Ebay is brilliant for finding anything that you need to make your wedding day special and it can be very cheap too."

"Don’t mention the word ‘wedding’ when calling for prices!"

"Do lots of research. You’ll find the same thing at very different prices."

"Don’t be afraid to ask! (If you don’t ask, you don’t get)."

"Remember to save money for your new life with your husband. One day of happiness can’t compare to a lifetime."

"Don’t hire a car; find a friend who has a nice one."

"Getting "daddy" in to help. He’s a fantastic negotiator and we’re hoping he’ll be able to cut the prices down a lot."

"Do your own bouquet. I got quoted silly prices for mine so I bought some foam roses to have a go and they look beautiful. They look so real and I had enough to make all the button holes, my bouquet, 4 bridesmaids, flower girl and two mum’s corsages. It all cost less than £50!"

Do your own wedding catering

"Do your own catering and get friends and relatives to contribute dishes."

"Involve people! We’re asking people to join in, rather than give us presents."

"Search for a venue that is flexible to what you want, so you don’t have to use their set packages."

"Always ask if it’s their best price and never commit immediately. They maybe willing to go a little lower, rather than loose your business. This is especially important if you’re planning on getting married out of season."

"Keep it simple. It’s all about the two people that are getting married. It’s not about anything else so long as you’re happy!"

"Buy rings over the internet – we saved a huge amount doing this."

Change your menue

"By making simple changes to a sample menu, we saved £8 per head for our overall food cost. With 120 guests, this worked out to be £960!"

"Be prepared to compromise!"

"Shop around, even for the smallest things. I’m creating my own favours using organza bags and chocolates. The organza bags on various wedding websites were nearly £70. I went to Hobbycraft and them on a ‘buy one get one free’ for £9.98 for the lot!!!"

"If friends offer help, don’t be proud. Take them up on the offer."

"Make things yourself. Borrow bits where possible!"

"Realising the most important thing is that you’re getting married, not how much you’ve spent on expensive items!"

"My best cheap wedding tips are: Do lots and lots of research! Be creative! Get other people to help."

"Ebay your heart out!"

Do your own wedding catering

"Go for what you and your partner want, not what is expected of you."

"Reduce your costs by not using a professional caterer or a photographer. I saved over £2,000!"

"Get married on a weekday. We saved over £2000 on our venue by getting married on a Thursday. We’re also getting cheaper quotes for food and photography too!"

"Take lots of people shopping with you. They’ll offer to pay for things here and there!!"

"Don’t be frightened to shop around, it might take a little longer, but you’ll find a gem of a deal!"

"If things are tight, don’t worry about borrowing or hiring things. People will only know if you tell them!"

Provide plenty of free water

"Make sure you have lots of water and fruit juice available at the reception. It’s cheaper than alcohol for when people are thirsty!"

"Keep a journal of all the things you’ve seen, their price and where they were. Then shop around and find it cheaper."

"Plan early so there’s more time for research, negotiating and DIY."

"Give your friends and family the option of being a bridesmaid, but tell them if they would like to be one, then they would have to pay for their dress. I now have 1 flower girl and 9 bridesmaids and it hasn’t cost me a penny!"

"Have a late wedding and leave out the wedding breakfast."

Make your own favours

"Don’t do things just because "that’s what’s done" at weddings. Choose the things you want because you like them."

"Get all your friends around to help make the favours instead of paying someone to do them."
