Clear Plastic Supports Between Wedding Cake Tiers?

by Terry
(Kent)

I am making my daughter's wedding cake and the design she has chosen shows the tiers sitting on what appears to be clear plastic boxes. Can you tell me more about these and how they are fixed in place, would you use dowels as with pillars?

Many thanks
Terry

Answer:

Modern wedding cakes are often presented with tiers made of plastic. It may sound odd, but these tiers are then filled with flowers, petals, fruit or whatever you like to create another layer giving a stylish, modern look.

The plastic boxes are usually made from acrylic and called 'acrylic separators' or 'stands'. The stands are fine to use with wedding cakes, but if you're making a particularly large wedding cake, then I'd check that they'll hold the weight.

You definitely need to use dowels to ensure the cakes above have enough support.

You can find these in many cake shops to buy or hire, or do a search for 'acrylic cake separators' or 'perspex cake separators' and you'll find lots of online stores selling them.

All the best

Nicola
