Confused Over Where To Get Married

by Rosie

My fiancé and I just got engaged a few weeks ago. He proposed on my 18th birthday and it was amazing. We live overseas from each other in the UK and he says he wants to have three weddings. One in America, one where he lives and one where I live.

I'm really worried about the money aspect and I'm worried he'll think I'm not taking his opinion into consideration if I say I don't want a wedding in America.

His parents don't want to come to where I live because they don't like planes and boats, but I think it's a little unfair on my family telling them they have to fly or get the boat over to his.

Your website has helped a lot, it's amazing. But I still don't know what to do about this situation.

Thank you.

Answer:

Congratulations on your engagement!

First of all, you can only get married once, so you’ll need to decide on which country you want to get married in. You’ll also need to check the legal requirements as I believe both parties (you and your fiancé) usually need to be resident in that country for a set amount of time before you can get married. If you check that out, that may help you decide where you get married.

There’s no reason why you can’t have two or three receptions though! You could even have a ‘repeat’ of the vows from the legal ceremony or a blessing in the various countries, but this will, of course, push up the cost.

The best thing would be to talk openly to your fiancé and discuss how you’re going to fund the weddings. He may already have a plan in mind. Together you should work out how you’re going to do this and then you can set about planning them!

I hope that helps.

Nicola

Two weddings
by: colette

Hi, we got married in las vegas just the two of us with no family, as the cost was too much for people.

However my daughter and family had arranged a blessing for us at our local Catholic church a week after we got back and it was fantastic.

It was all done on a budget and the family helped as much as they could. It's amazing all those hidden tallents! They all loved getting involved and having an important part to play.

I think it cost no more than £500 or £600 and we even got to say our vows infront of everyone. It was just like getting married all over again but this time surrouded by our family.

Blessings can be just as good as the wedding itself so don't worry. Maybe you could do the same as us and get either family to organise one or the other.
