Depth of Wedding Cake

by Jill
(ENGLAND)

I have made my own wedding cake and used Delia's rich fruit cake as my base cake. It's not turned out very deep though. How deep should it be? There will be three more layers above, chocolate, vanilla and lemon. I want to get the proportions right.

Answer:

Usually with wedding cakes, the tiers are all the same depth, it's just the width of the cake that changes. So whatever width you choose for the other layers, make sure the depth is the same, then your cake will look balanced.

Depths can range on wedding cakes from 2" high right up to 6" high.

Here are some pictures of wedding cakes with the same depth tiers so you can see what I mean:

I hope that helps.
