Clever Tools To Design
Your Own Wedding Dress

These days there are a few nifty tools to help you design your own wedding dress. These tools allow you to see what your intended dress might look like once assembled. They also allow you to quickly and easily change something at the design stage if it’s not quite right.

Design your own wedding dress with iVillage

There are two main dress creators available online. My favourite is iVillage’s wedding dress designer as it has a wide range of different styles, lengths and accessories to choose from.

The first step is to choose your body shape – which is great as you can then find styles that will suit you. However, the only thing that lets it down is the way you choose your body size. The image just seems to ‘stretch’ – which isn’t really a true picture!

You then go on to select skirts, hemlines, trains, sleeves, bodices and necklines until you find a design that you like. Once you have the dress you like you can then accessories such as a veil, tiara, gloves and jewellery to complete the look.

It’s actually a really good exercise to understand all the different types of dress style and so good preparation for any bride before walking into a wedding dress!

The Wedding Dress creator

The Wedding Dress creator tool is similar to the iVillage one, but is a little more simple.

The options to design your own dress are little different and overall the tool is a bit more basic. It’s still a good starting point though and worth a try. The funny thing about this one is the image of the bride reminds me of Princess Fiona from Shrek!

You can design your own wedding dress easily with these tools, however they’ll only give you a rough idea of what you might look like. The nuances of different women’s figures will change the way a dress looks and you certainly can’t see the details.

From using these tools, select several ideas and print them out. You can then take them to a dress shop to find a dress that fits your ideas. Alternatively, you can find a tailor or seamstress to help guide you and then create your dress for you.

They're definitely a good starting point, but you will need the help and experience of a professional to create or find the final design.

Don't forget, you don't have to start from scratch with your dress. Remember that Bratpack film called Pretty in Pink with Molly Ringwald? You could take a second hand dress and alter it so it becomes your dream dress. This is especially true of dresses that have lots of material in them (i.e. those with full skirts). Again, a professional seamstress will be able to help you achieve this for a fraction of the price of designer gown, so you can be the belle of the ball, or prom in Molly's case.
