Do I Need A Wooden Board For The Bottom Wedding Cake?

Do I need a wood board for the bottom cake? I usually use a drum 3" larger than the bottom cake. The bottom cake is fruit with two sponges on top - 10", 8", 6". The cakes are stacked using no pillars.

Answer:

A cake drum would be fine in this case as you're using fruit with sponge cakes on top. Make sure your cake drum is at least 1 inch thick to take the weight.

Fruit cakes tend be heavier than sponge cake, so if it was fruit for all three, then I would suggest a wood board for a sturdier finish.

I would strongly recommend using cake boards and dowels between your layers to prevent them sinking though. The last thing you need is a sinking wedding cake!

All the best
