Answer

Planners estimate one drink per person per hour. A bottle of wine or Champagne contains five drinks; a litre of spirits contains 28 drinks (based on a 35ml measure).

For each bottle of spirits, you need three containers of mixers e.g. Coke, lemonade, tonic, juice and so on.

During daytime events, whether you are serving a full bar or one that’s limited to wine, beer and champagne, don't forget to factor in those who prefer don't drink alcohol or are driving.

Here is an estimate for a 5 hour reception with 80 people featuring a full bar with average drinkers:
160 bottles of beer
32 bottles of wine as follows:
• 16 bottles of Champagne
• 8 bottles of White
• 8 bottles of Red
8 bottles of spirits as follows:
• 3 bottles of Vodka
• 2 bottles of Whisky
• 1 bottle of Gin
• 1 bottle of Rum
• 1 bottle of Bourbon (Jack Daniels)

If you are serving only beer, wine and Champagne, here is another estimate for average drinkers:
240 bottles of beer
48 bottles of wine as follows:
• 24 bottles of Champagne
• 12 bottles of White
• 12 bottles of Red

I hope that helps.

Nicola
