Getting Married At Home

I was wondering if it would be possible to marry in your own home/garden, can you please let me know how I would go about organising this? Thank you.

How to find a low cost venue

Ask your own question

Answer:

Unfortunately, you're not able to hold a marriage ceremony in your own home as the building needs to be licensed for marriage ceremonies. There are strict rules governing what the building should be like and there are quite expensive fees for the license itself (up to £1,500). Your local council website will be able to give you more guidelines about obtaining licenses as well as give you a list of local licensed premises.

To legally marry, you will need to use a licensed premise and usually the cheapest option is the lcoal register office. You could then hold a blessing or a Humanist ceremony in your garden, however you would need to pay for the celebrant for these separately, so in effect you would be adding to your costs.

If you're really keen on an outdoor wedding, you will be very lucky to find a venue that holds outdoor ceremonies as the ceremony itself needs to take place within the licensed building. Some venues do have permanent outdoor structures that are licensed (i.e. fancy gazebos, small chapels), but they tend to come with a hefty price tag.

I hope that helps and best of luck with your plans.

Nicola
