Groom Does Not Turn Up On Wedding Day

by Tony Allen
(Alberta, Canada)

i>In the week before his wedding, the groom discovers that he is not the father of his pregnant bride to be.

He is seriously annoyed and decides to go along with the wedding although he and his family intend not turn up on the day.

Exactly 45 minutes before the wedding takes place he arranges for a letter to be delivered to the bride's house telling them of his decision not to marry and the reasons why.

Does he have any liability for the bride's expenses?

Answer:

What an interesting dilemma. You're based in Canada and I'm in the UK and our laws are very different. I'm certainly no legal expert, so I would seek the advice of a solicitor/lawyer.

Regardless, you have chosen not get married and to this point, there will be costs associated with the wedding. Usually any wedding insurance taken out is not valid if the bride or groom decides to cancel the wedding. Insurance normally covers 'unforeseen' circumstances, rather than 'choices'.

I would definitely speak to a lawyer and your insurance company!
