My Handmade Wedding Invitations for Under £30I decided that handmade wedding invitations were the way forward after looking at the price of wedding stationery and nearly choking! More specifically, invitations made by my own fair hands. After a bit of searching, a little designing and a touch of patience, I managed to get my stationery budget down to only £27 for over 55 invites, 55 thank you cards and 120 envelopes. All you need is a bit of time and some patience. Here I cover some practical advice, tips and ideas about making handmade wedding invitations and stationery. First things first, I’ll explain how I got started and what I did. To get some inspiration, I started by looking through friends' wedding magazines and searching the internet for different wedding stationery designs. Seeing how the professionals do it, really gives you an idea of what you can create. Then I worked on selecting different designs based on whether I could re-create them or not. I took some paper and some old art materials and starting trying out different designs. Some of the things I tried included using stickers, drawing simple flowers, hearts and cute little drawings of a bride and groom. For more ideas and inspiration, check out these ideas. I also took a small passport sized photo of my fiancé and I and traced our faces. A nice technique, certainly unique, but really hard to replicate 150 times! After I had a few ideas, my fiancé and I sat down and agreed on a heart design that we both liked, but more importantly it was quick and easy to replicate 150 times! After all, in my case, I would be drawing the little motif on each invite and thank you card! For my other wedding stationery, I decided that I would use plain A4 paper for the orders of service and seating plan, both typed on my computer, and then I bought plain white place cards and hand wrote the names of each person on them. It all worked perfectly and I sent my handmade wedding invitations out second-class post to ensure I saved a bit of cash there too. I got all my paper, envelopes and card from Liz's Crafts – a really cheap online shop specialising in homemade cards. They have lots of embellishments, stickers, bows and all sorts of different types of paper and card. At the time, I didn't have a printer at home, which is why I drew each invitation by hand. I now have a printer and have been experimenting with my arty streak. You can create loads of different types of wedding invitations easily and print them off at home - it'll save you loads of time, rather than drawing them all out like I did. I've actually set up another website called Wedding Invitation Ideas which has loads of free printable wedding invitation designs and templates. So if you don't fancy coming up with something yourself, then why not try one of the designs from there?
