Ideas and Templates for
Homemade Wedding Invitations

When making my homemade wedding invitations I came up with lots of ideas and designs. So I thought I’d share these with you. They're all easy to use and simple to create.

Simply follow the instructions for each one and you’ll make your homemade wedding invitations in no time. There are several designs to choose from, but feel free to mix and match to create your own unique wedding invitation.

All the cards are made from a basic pre-made greeting card (on offer at £4.99 for 50 cards and envelopes from my local art shop). I’ve used a mixture of permanent black pen, silver pen, glitter fabric paint, red water soluble pencil, ribbon and a bit of black card. All the designs are basic and easily replicated – so you don’t have to spend all your weekends doing your wedding stationery!

I got virtually all my bits and pieces from Liz's Crafts. They've got a great range of paper, card, envelopes, embellishments, stickets etc. They're also the cheapest I found online and they offer free P&P in the UK.

With these invites, the colours can all be changed to match you colour theme. I’ve stuck with black, white and red because I like those colours and for ease.

Finally, before we start, I’m lucky I have neat handwriting (or so I think), so I’ve written by hand on the cards. If you’re not comfortable doing this, then simply type up the words, duplicate them on the page and print them out. Cut out the words and stick it to your invite or other stationery. It will still look great! Alternatively, print it out directly onto the card blank.

Glue and/or glue dots

  • Cut a piece of black card or paper in a 7cm square.
  • Cut 8.5cm off the end of the ribbon and place to one side.
  • Tie the remaining ribbon around the middle of the square. At the front of the card tie the ribbon in a bow. Arrange the bow until you’re happy.
  • Secure the ribbon at the back of the square with a little glue.
  • With the 8.5cm piece of ribbon, slide it under the bow and attach the extra ends on the back of the square with a bit of glue.
  • Glue the square to the card.
  • Draw a border around the edge of the card.
  • Write ‘Wedding Invitation’ or your preferred wording under the black square.

Illustrated Homemade Wedding Invitations

All these cards are hand drawn. Just practice with a few different designs until you find something you like and then add a splash of colour with a water soluble pencil.

Simply use the pencil like a normal colouring pencil – the thicker you go with the colour, the more intense the colour will be when you add water. These examples only use a little bit of colour.

Finish off the cards with a border around the edge of the card. It just frames them nicely. Try writing the words on the front on a separate piece of card in an alternative colour, just to add a bit of texture – like in the ‘Mr and Mrs’ card.

I've actually put loads of little illustrations that are free to download in the free icon gallery at Wedding Invitation Ideas Ideas. So all you need to do is download them and print them out direct on to your card blanks.

Glitter paint for fabric

  • Cut a rectangle of the black card so it’s a little smaller than the greeting card. (Don’t attach it to the greeting card just yet).
  • Use the glitter paint to draw three rectangles in the centre of the black card.
  • Whilst the paint (which is like a glue) is drying, cut the ribbon to the appropriate length to fit in each tier of the cake. Position the ribbon in the cake. It should be easy, then allow to dry.
  • Once dry, draw a heart in silver pen on the top tier and write your chosen words underneath.

A word of warning on glitter fabric paints: they don’t look that great when you first use them. In fact, they look quite messy. Don’t worry as the white glue dries to be clear, so the finished result looks at lot better. Practice a little on some scrap paper to ensure that you can control the thickness of the glue to get the look you want.

You can even extend your homemade wedding invitations design to your thank you cards and place cards too. Enjoy!
