Answer:

Depending on the type of cake, will depend on the number of servings you get from it. Fruit cake goes a lot further than sponge cake as it is richer, so your guests don't quite need as much. Also if you're serving your cake as dessert, then you'll need more.

The table below is intended as a guide to the number of servings in a cake and assumes that the fruit cake will be served as 1" squares and the sponge cake will be served as 2" x 1" pieces.

Don't forget, you may want to keep the top tier of fruit cake for the Christening of your first child, so allow for this!
