Although you can readily buy sugarpaste already coloured, you are limited to the range of colours. Colouring the paste yourself will give you the exact colour you are looking for.

Start with a good quality colouring paste, not a liquid food colouring. You can get this at your local cake shop. Try to avoid supermarket colouring, it makes the sugarpaste overly wet and will change its consistency. Using a toothpick or the end of the palette knife add the colour to the paste and knead until thoroughly incorporated. A little colour will go a long way so start small, you can always add more.

If you are unable to find the shade of pink you are looking for you may need to mix colours. This colour mixing chart will help you create the perfect colour for your cake.

 

Another option is to paint the sugarpaste after it is on the cake and has dried. Dilute some of the paste colour in gin or vodka. With a clean paintbrush or a damp natural sponge apply to the dry sugarpaste.

It is best to practice both of these a little before you ice your cake to perfect the techniques.
