How To Keep The Little ’Uns Occupied?
by Abbegail

I’ve been to a few weddings, and one thing is always apparent... by 5 pm the children are bored rigid! They don’t want any more photos taken and there are still a few hours to go before the evening entertainment starts.
We are getting married in June 2009 and pretty much have it all mapped out. The venue is Carreg Cennen Castle in South Wales. We're having a blessing in the castle and the reception at the visitor's centre - a gorgeous converted barn.
We’ve got a twmpath (ceilidh) band starting at about 7.30/ 8pm. I expect our dinner will be finished by 6pm which leaves an hour and a half for people to be standing about. This is fine for the adults as they will be drinking and socialising, but the kids (there will be about 12 of them, youngest 1, oldest 12) will probably need some stimulation.
Have you got any inexpensive suggestions? (We have a friend who might do a puppet show!)
Thanks

Answer:
I think the puppet idea would be great! Your friend would probably be honoured to entertain your special little guests!
It’s difficult with children at weddings. You’re right, they do get bored easily, but I think its essential to have them there and more importantly, it can be fun for the big kids too.
First off, I’d avoid giving them sugary sweets and fizzy drinks as they’ll only get more agitated. I know it’s a bit of trend to put sweets out at their table place, but try to avoid this. Instead, give them puzzles and colouring books and hopefully that will keep them occupied through the speeches!
For standing around afterwards, why not try some games? If it’s a sunny day, set up some games out on the lawn. What about bowls or even crocket? For inside and outside – try Twister, remember all the fun you had with that?
A dressing up section is always good fun and kids love it – especially the girls. Facepainting is usually another hit with kids, but again, better for girls and the younger ones.
You could also set up a Playstation or Wii - just make sure you provide inclusive games that are as fun to watch as they are to play. Something like Singstar or a physical game on the Wii will keep them active, whilst competing against each other. Best of all, you can borrow your mate’s console and games, so it should be free!
If you want to splash out, you could hire a magician or caricaturist. It may be a little pricey, but they’d certainly be fun. For the short space of time you’re looking for, you might be able to find one for around £200.
After all that, they can join in the dancing with the twmpath band – if you can drag them away!
Best of luck!
