Ivory Or White For A Black Bride?
I'm don't know what colour wedding gown to choose. I'm an African bride and I don't know what colour will look better. White or ivory? Thanks for your help.
Answer:
It's actually quite hard to recommend a colour for you as I don't know how dark or light your skin is. So, the best thing to do would be to try on different coloured dresses and see which colours work best with your skin tone.
Get a friend to go with you, so they can help you decide which colours suit you better. When trying the dresses, lift the fabric close to your face and see how it affects your colouring. This is where the help of your friend will be beneficial.
Some colours will brighten your face and make your skin tones look more even. Others will make the dark circles under your eyes more prominent and pull out the less attractive tones - redness or blotchiness.
It's important to do this with no make-up on so you get an accurate idea of which colours work for you. It's also important, so you don't get any make-up on the dress!
For me, generally, I prefer the warmer colours of ivory and off-white on darker skins. The colours tend to look softer next to darker skin. Bright white can often be quite harsh and I believe few people can carry it off.
One last thing - different designers use the same colour terms, but one designer's ivory, may be another designer's cream. So be careful - just because 'ivory' or 'white' suits you, don't assume they'll still look good next to your skin. Always try on your dress in your preferred colour - don't go by a swatch.
Good luck!
