My Website Success Story

Hi, I’m Nicola and this is my website.

People often ask what I do, so here's my story about how this website came to be a success and how I made my dream a reality...

I'm now my own boss and work from the comfort of my living room.

My old working life

Long hours and dealing with difficult clients all day wasn’t much fun and I was really beginning to hate going to work.

I also had a nagging concern that there weren't many women over 35 in the industry. Which made me wonder, what happened to them? Advertising is an industry for the young and being in my early 30’s I was keen to find an alternative.

I tried to think of different careers or opportunities, but was often stuck with the fact that I’d still have a long commute into the centre of London and/or work long hours, for little fulfilment.

I wanted something that would give me flexibility, freedom and the opportunity to be my own boss.

I think that’s something we all dream of...

With working hard though, my creativity was stifled leaving me frustrated both at work and at home. Something had to be done!

A little journey

Our wedding day

In summer 2006, I married Stu. We had a cheap wedding as you probably know.

Our reason for a cheap wedding was because we were planning a very long honeymoon, about 8 months to be precise. It was to be our little adventure before properly settling down together.

We had many, many long bus journeys on our travels. Eight hours here, twelve hours there. Plenty of time to let the imagination stretch and come up with some ideas for my future career.

I knew that I wanted to do something that I loved. I love writing, I love the internet and I love weddings.

I knew from my research that content on the internet is king.

With good content, your visitors will love you and they’ll click.

Click on ads or click on affiliate links and every time they click or buy, I’d make a small commission.

Volunteering with street kids in Peru

So whilst in Peru, I set about writing lots of articles about how to have a cheap wedding. After all, this is something I knew a lot about.

My only problem, getting the site designed and built.

I had no idea how to do this, oh, and I had no idea about how to make the pages rank well in the search engines so that I'd have visitors that would click! So it seemed like a bit of a pipe dream really...

You may ask why on earth was I sitting in front of a computer when I should have been out seeing the amazing sights of South America?

Well, I was seeing all the sights, but instead of reading novels and relaxing in between all the wonderful sights, I was building my new business – and loving it!

Not only was it bringing back all the memories of my recent wedding, I was learning so much about the internet which I love as well.

And to help me with my new writing career, I found a free ebook called Make Your Content Pre-Sell. It’s the best resource for learning how to write content for the web that I’ve seen. It’s also from Sitesell, and best of all it’s completely FREE.

By the time I got back to London four months later, I had the most amazing memories from my trip and the best part of 75 pages on my site.

My traffic was growing and growing, month on month - just showing that SBI delivers on what it says.

Well, back to London and unfortunately for me, back to work.

My previous company took me back and I started back all refreshed and motivated, raring to go!

That soon passed as the hour long commute and the demanding clients took it out of me again. In addition, seeing the initial success of my site had made my desire to quit even stronger.

Beginning my dream

Steadily, over the next few months I added more pages. As the site grew, so did its rankings in the search engines and so did the revenue.

I soon realised, that in time, this site was going to be bringing in some serious money.

Not just a meal out at a nice restaurant a couple of times a month, but something that would actually support me. My excitement was uncontainable and my imagination went wild.

Could I really have this as my business?

Initially, I built my site for a bit of fun and because it was interesting. For me, it was a bonus if it made any money. But now, thanks to SBI, it’s a serious money earner. And I'm building a couple of other sites through Site Build It! to go with it.

And the best part of this story...

...at the beginning of this year, I quit my job to focus on my new business – much, much sooner than I could have ever hoped.

I could have built Cheap Wedding Success using any of the tools available on the internet. Going that way, I’d probably have a site with a little bit of traffic and I'd still be working out how to make money from it.

Site Build It helped me every step of the way and allowed me to realise my dream. Without SBI, I’d still have that long commute, long hours and stressful life.

Now, I have plenty of time to go for coffee in the middle of the day, do a couple of yoga or dance classes as well as build my other sites.

But more importantly, I get spend my WHOLE evening with my husband so we can spend quality time together, rather than me arriving home at 8pm or 9pm every night, being utterly exhausted.

It’s funny to think that your hobby or a passion can turn into something profitable in your spare time!
