The Hidden Costs Of Buying A
Wedding Gown
As a savvy shopper, the first thing you do when buying a wedding gown is look at the price tag to make sure it’s within your budget.
Before you go ahead with that beautiful “in-budget” gown, there are plenty of hidden costs that you’ll need to think about. From alternations to delivery, make sure that all the elements listed below are included in the price tag and of course, your budget.
Check if fittings and storage are included
When buying your wedding gown from a wedding boutique, you’ll need fittings to ensure it fits like a glove.
There is likely to be at least two fittings for your gown, possibly more if you lose or gain weight before the big day. It’s worthwhile asking to make sure these fittings and the storage of the dress are included in the price tag.
Also double check that if any additional fittings required these are at no extra cost.
Flexible wedding gown design
If you’ve got your heart set on the skirt of one gown, but the detail on the top of another, and they are both by the same designer, it’s possible to customise a gown. This is great way to get a unique look, but there is often a charge for this. So if you go down this route, check the charge and add it to your budget.
Check delivery
Once you’ve had your final fitting, many shops will store your dress for you until nearer the day. They may then offer a delivery service to your venue to minimise your husband-to-be getting a sneak preview.
Beware, as there maybe a hefty charge for this service, so before you agree to it, check the price.
Dress carriers and protection
Many dress shops will supply you with a gown carrier to ensure your bridal gown arrives in perfect condition. These are oversized suit carriers and so can be quite pricey. Check that it’s included free of charge.
Cleaning and preserving
After the big day, many dress shops will offer a cleaning and preserving service. This is then often outsourced to a local dry cleaner.
If you source this service yourself, you’ll save yourself a packet.
Your local dry cleaner should also be able to provide the right materials you need for preserving your dress, should you wish to keep it.
