Wedding Invitation Envelopes

Wedding Invitation Envelopes - Sizes and StylesIf you’re making your own invites then you’ll need to buy wedding invitation envelopes.

They come in all different shapes and sizes and for most people the options are a little bewildering. From sizes to styles, this article explains the basics to get you started.

Basic envelope sizing
The first baffling thing with envelopes is the sizing. We’re all familiar with A4, A5 and A6 for paper, but for envelopes it gets a little more complicated.

The easiest sizes are C5 and C6, which are suitable for a card of A5 and A6 size. Then there is DL size which is suitable for a piece of A4 paper or letter folded into thirds and finally a square shape. The basic sizes are:
C5 6.5”x9”
C6 4.5”x6.5”
DL 4.5”x8.5”
Square 5.2”x5.2”

Cards often come with envelopes
If you’re buying pre-folded cards in a pack, you’ll often get envelopes with them. However if you’re buying the cards separately you’ll need to make sure you get the right envelopes to match your wedding invitations. Many good retailers will recommend the what size your wedding invitation envelopes should be, including Liz's Crafts.

Special custom envelopes
If you’re making your cards, or have chosen a special size pre-folded card, then it's likely you'll need a custom sized envelope. You may even need to make your own envelopes. (You can avoid this by sticking to the sizes outlined above or by buying pre-made blank cards).

Special sized envelopes are expensive as you’re not able to buy ‘off the shelf’ and making your own envelopes is very time consuming, so again, if you're a novice, it's best to avoid special sizes. If you stick with standard sizes your wedding invitation envelopes will be cheaper.

Wedding envelope styles
There are two main standard envelope styles. The first, and more common style has a pointed tip on the fold. This is where the glued fold comes down into a ‘v’ shaped tip. The second is a square shaped fold.

Some (more expensive) envelopes are double lined. This adds sturdiness to your wedding invitation and a sense of luxury. If you’re using pre-folded cards (without envelopes provided) then one of the standard envelope styles is fine. After all, once you’ve got all your information and invite in your envelope, you’ll want to start thinking about weight and cost of postage!

The contents of your wedding invitations
You’ll need to consider whether your wedding invitation envelopes will take all information you need to include with your invite. Depending on how much you need to tell your guests, a standard size envelope will suffice. Don’t forget, you’ll need to include:
- RSVP card or details on how to respond
- Details of marriage celebration venue and a map on how to get there
- Details of the reception venue (if different) and a map
- Hotel or B&B information
- Gift list information
- Any other specific information you might want to tell your guests, such as taxi numbers or dress code

As with all aspects of your wedding, shop around for your envelopes – you’ll make sure you get the best prices. Liz's Crafts do a good quality range of envelopes at low prices. You can buy the exact quantity you want, so you only pay for what you need. Just don’t forget to buy extras for those little mistakes!
