Wedding Reception
Decoration Ideas

When it comes to decorating your venue, there’s a wealth of wedding reception decoration ideas around. In this article I cover off ideas that are easy and affordable, so you can stay within your budget.

Balloons
Balloons make a welcome addition
to a reception and are a cheaper alternative to flowers. These days balloons come in all different shapes, sizes and colours, including pearlescent and metallic. They’re an effective way to decorate a venue cheaply as you get a lot more for your money.

Paper streamers, bunting and banners
There are hundreds of different types of streamers and banners available these days. From simple, paper streamers to personalised banners to hang from the ceiling, there’s lots of choice. A traditional approach is to use bunting, which is becoming more popular with country and garden themes.

When I got married a found that PartyBox was the best place for streamers, balloons and other decorations.

Candles at a weddingCandles
Tealights and candles make a venue look very pretty and provide a delicate, romantic lighting. They’re also a very cheap way to decorate your venue, particularly since you can pick up 100 tealights for a couple of pounds in the superstores.

Lanterns
You can litter lanterns around your venue and outside too. You can easily make these yourself with jam jars and tin cans. With the jam jars, simply wind some wire around the rim and create a handle. Drop in a candle and hang it in the garden, on a tree or place on the ground.

With tin cans, create a pattern from punching a nail through the can with a hammer. If you're going to hang them, punch two holes at the top on either side of the can and create a handle using wire. Then drop in a candle or tealight and hang or place in the garden.

Pretty fairy lights
Fairy lights make a pretty addition to any venue and usually most of us have a few packets lying around from Christmas. Asking around family and friends as well will uncover a few more sets. Alternatively, you can easily pick up packets in some of the superstores for a few pounds.

Flowers
Wedding flower arrangementUsually quite expensive, but if you can use the flowers from the ceremony venue (i.e the church), then you’re on to a winner. Free standing arrangements alongside table decorations always look great. If you decide on flowers, go for in season blooms and simple arrangements – or perhaps a friend or relative could look at these for you?

Glass pyramids
A more opulent way to decorate the venue is to create a pyramid of glasses to pour the toasting bubbles into. A dramatic centrepiece and cheap alternative to a chocolate fountain or ice sculpture. Just make sure the pyramid will work when the champagne or sparkling wine is poured in. Perhaps do a practice run with water?!
