Wedding Reception Games and Ice Breakers
Wedding reception games are a great way for your guests to get to know each other.
Guess who!
A great way to get your guests talking is to put pictures of celebrities that look like the guest on their place card.
This was done at a recent wedding we went to and it work brilliantly at getting the guests around the table talking.
It even got you talking to the other tables as well, so a great ice breaker!
(This is my place card and that's Natalie Portman! How complementary? My new hairstyle is pretty similar too!)
An intriguing introduction
A simpler and easier way to introduce the people around the table, is to place an interesting fact about that person on their neighbours place card. For example, my neighbours place card might say about me: ‘Nicola loves to tango in the Argentine style at the weekends’. With these snippets of information, you’re looking to provide enough information to strike up a conversation between your guests.
Truth or lies
This wedding reception game is a twist on the one above, where you write three facts about the person on the place card. Two will be the truth and one will be a lie. The object of the game is for the neighbour to work out which one is the lie. If you don’t know any interesting facts about your guests, then you could ask them to provide a couple on the RSVP.
A simple classic: Have you ever?
One of my favourite wedding reception games is to play ‘Have you ever?’ This is a great icebreaker and can easily be done around a table. When your guests first sit down, each guest must take it in turn to ask ‘Have you ever ....?’. This then opens up the discussion as the guests learn something about their table companions.
Year of the coin
At each place setting you place a penny coin. When the guests sit down, they must introduce themselves by telling the table what they did in the year the coin was minted. If they weren’t alive, then they can simple add a decade – this allows children to be included.
Scavenger hunt (just for the kids)
Just after the ceremony, when the kids have to hang around for the meal to be served, why not get them to play a scavenger hunt. You could easily hide five to ten objects in and around your venue, giving cryptic clues to the whereabouts of each one. With a little preparation, this wedding game will keep them occupied for an hour or so.
There are also plenty of ideas for keeping the little ones occupied in this article about wedding games for kids.
For these wedding reception games, it’s important that your guests participate. In order to get this to happen, leave instructions either at each place setting, on the place card or on a couple of cards in the centre of the table. You or your toastmaster could also make an announcement just as you sit down.
The great thing about these wedding reception games is that they’re around later in the evening when people want to relax and sit down. They’ll help keep the guests, in particular the children, occupied throughout the evening too.
