What Flowers Are Good In May?

by Tonia Nigrelli
(Waltham Cross Hertfordshire)

I am hoping to make my daughter’s wedding bouquet. She's getting married on the 8th May. It is a small family wedding, on a tight budget in a register office and the wedding will be at 1pm.

What flowers would be good for this time of year? When should I make the bouquet so that it will survive the wedding ceremony at least?

Also my grandaughter will be nearly 4 and she's going to be the only flowergirl. Do you have any suggestions for her flowers? I would really appreciate some help please.

Answer:

There are many flowers that can be used alone or with greenery to make a stunning bridal bouquet.

Consider gerbera daisies, peonies, roses or tulips.

Gather the stems together, trimming any loose leaves and prickly thorns, secure the stems together with floral tape or a rubber band.

Trim the ends of the stems so they are all the same length. Place the bouquet in water in a cool place until just before the ceremony. If you can't keep the flowers in water, then spray them with water frequently.

Wait and tie the ribbon around the stems until after you take them out of the water. You can make the bouquet a day in advance and then wrap the ribbon as close to the time of the ceremony as possible.

Your granddaughter’s bouquet could be a miniature version of the bridal bouquet or you could make a pomander ball bouquet for her. I think the round shape of this type of bouquet is really unique and fun for a flower girl, it's also easy to hold with a ribbon handle. They are easy to make using round floral foam, ribbon, and flowers of your choice - gerberas would be perfect.

I hope that helps. If you've got any ideas, please add them.

Nicola
