I want to decorate each of my cake tiers using a ribbon, but I am not sure how I should do this? Can you help?

Answer:

Attaching ribbon to your cake is a very simple and elegant way to decorate your wedding cake.

Firstly, gently measure the distance around your cake with a fabric measuring tape and cut your ribbon to the corresponding length, adding an inch to overlap.

If you have a relatively rigid piece of ribbon you can run it around the cake tight enough that all you have to do is attach it with a dab of royal icing or a pin with a large pearl head on the back (this will ensure you don’t lose it in the cake later). Be sure to overlap the ribbon in the back to hide any rough edges.

Alternatively, you can use a mixture of meringue powder and water and brush a thin layer around the cake and affix the ribbon over top. Don’t make it too wet or the ribbon will slip.

If you are concerned with your ribbon getting greasy or the cake colour showing through attach wax or parchment paper with double sided tape to the back of the ribbon before adhering to your cake.

Hope that helps.

Attaching a ribbon to your wedding cake
by: Anonymous

I have just made a wedding cake for the first time and got advice from a professional who told me what they do is to dip the measured ribbon briefly into cold water then dry off the excess with a towell. Then wrap it around the cake fastening it at the slight overlap at the back with a dab of royal icing (and a dab of royal icing underneath the front piece. As it dries it pulls a little tighter and looks very professional.

I was advised not to use pins for health and safety reasons but I guess you could sterilse the pin first.
