When Should I Ice The Cake?

I am making a wedding cake for my son's wedding. How long an interval is possible after putting on the marzipan icing before the royal icing is put on? In other words, does the marzipan icing suffer ill effects if it is put on the cake for at least 5 weeks before the royal icing?
